On Saturday, May 14, 2016, William P. Askin, Esq. presented at the Conference of the Alliance of Private Education Schools of North Jersey. The event was held at the Eisenhower Conference Center in Livingston, NJ from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm. Mr. Askin was asked to cover the vital legal intricacies of estate planning and techniques for families with a child with special needs. Topics he covered included options for achieving Medicaid eligibility for individuals with developmental disabilities, the Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, Special Needs Trusts, Supplemental Benefit Trusts, Guardianships, Living Wills and Powers of Attorney.
Formed in 2011, the Alliance is an association of 33 New Jersey approved private education schools dedicated to helping parents and educators better understand and access appropriate program options in special education. The Jean M. Manfra School/Willowglen Academy of Sparta is a member of the Alliance and also participated in the event. The goal of the Association is to see that parents, school administrators, teachers and child advocates are well informed about the special education needs of children, teens and young adults with disabilities – particularly those with more complex needs – and understand the full range of placement options available to them.
